Marine Survey: Bathymetry, Sediment Profiling & Secchi Disk Monitoring – SEZAD, Duqm

GIS Mappers successfully completed a comprehensive marine survey for the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD), Oman. The project encompassed bathymetric profiling, seabed sediment sampling, and Secchi disk water transparency measurements. This initiative supports coastal erosion assessment and coastal protection nedesignar the Duqm Port area.

A pre-survey investigation ensured safety and alignment with the client’s objectives. The bathymetric survey was performed using an Odom Echotrac MKIII dual-frequency echo sounder (210 kHz and 33 kHz). The GPS antenna was precisely aligned above the transducer pole, while a Valeport Tide Gauge was installed for real-time tide correction. Navigation data were processed using HydroPro software and referenced in UTM coordinates.

Sediment collection was conducted using grab samplers, specifically designed to extract undisturbed samples of surface layers up to 10–15 cm. The collected samples were analyzed using ASTM sieve methods to identify gravel, sand, and silt-clay compositions. Grain-size separation and weight ratios were recorded for engineering design purposes.

Water clarity was assessed using a Secchi disk — a black and white quadrant disk lowered into the sea. The depth at which the disk disappeared and reappeared was noted, providing insight into water turbidity. The survey showed that deeper zones exhibited higher transparency, while the nearshore environment had elevated turbidity due to suspended sediments and organic matter.

Contour maps at 0.5m and 2.5m intervals were prepared at a scale of 1:2500. These deliverables, along with DWG drawings and sediment analysis reports, were submitted to the client. This survey forms a key component for sustainable marine infrastructure planning in SEZAD and supports future environmental impact assessments.
