Hydrographic & Geophysical Survey – Khasab
Port Redevelopment

GIS Mappers conducted a comprehensive hydrographic, geophysical, and ocean current survey at the Khasab Port redevelopment site in Musandam, Sultanate of Oman. This project, commissioned by Atkins, was aimed at delivering high-resolution seabed and subsurface data to guide infrastructure development and marine construction activities at the port.

Seismic and Side Scan Sonar Saudi Arabia

A detailed bathymetric survey was conducted using an Odom Hydrotrac Echo Sounder with a Valeport Tide Gauge for tidal correction. The system was configured for dual frequency (210 kHz and 33 kHz) output, with GPS positioning converted into UTM coordinates using navigation software. Sound velocity profiles and bar checks were completed each morning to ensure vertical accuracy. Tide readings were logged continuously for accurate depth corrections.

The geophysical portion of the survey involved side scan sonar imaging and seismic sub-bottom profiling. The sonar equipment was towed along pre-determined transects to identify sediment layers, buried objects, and any geological anomalies beneath the seabed. Data was recorded and processed using CODA GeoSurvey software for detailed interpretation.

To support marine design and dredging evaluations, ocean current investigations were conducted using ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) devices. These instruments recorded current velocity and direction at 10-minute intervals over a 30-day lunar cycle. All instruments were deployed at strategic locations near the shoreline and Khor Qada.

The final report included detailed bathymetric charts, side scan sonar mosaics, seismic interpretation profiles, and current flow visualizations. This integrated marine survey solution provided reliable geospatial and environmental datasets, supporting safe and sustainable redevelopment at Khasab Port.
