GIS Mappers was commissioned by Environmental Horizons to execute a detailed bathymetric survey in Doga, located along the western coastline of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The project aimed to produce an accurate map of the underwater topography in support of future development initiatives, environmental management, and infrastructure design. This survey formed a key part of a broader topographic and marine assessment program critical to coastal planning in the region.
The bathymetric survey was conducted using a high-resolution M3 Sonar Depth Echo Sounder, allowing for the generation of precise seabed profiles. The selected survey zone was carefully defined to align with project goals and ensure spatial accuracy in depth data collection. Prior to field deployment, GIS Mappers performed pre-survey site assessment and planning to account for environmental and logistical variables.
In conjunction with the sonar survey, satellite image data was processed using Agisoft Metashape to generate a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), enhancing the integration between terrestrial and underwater datasets. The hydrographic survey team conducted on-site equipment checks and calibration before mobilizing to the coastal survey grid. All data collection followed rigorous protocols using RTK GNSS positioning, and sound velocity corrections were applied to improve vertical accuracy.
Data was processed using Hypack® and Hysweep® software, with careful adjustment for tidal changes and signal noise. GIS Mappers employed a quality-controlled workflow to ensure that positional, depth, and reflectivity data were aligned with international survey standards. Weather-related challenges were mitigated through schedule optimization and software-based correction techniques.
The final deliverables included a complete bathymetric chart of the Doga survey area, along with XYZ point cloud files, digital terrain models, and elevation grids. This data is now being used by Environmental Horizons for infrastructure planning, environmental baseline studies, and hazard mitigation in the region. It also serves as a valuable reference for long-term scientific monitoring of coastal changes.
GIS Mappers’ role in this project highlights its leadership in marine and hydrographic surveying in Saudi Arabia. With advanced equipment, skilled personnel, and strict adherence to international protocols, GIS Mappers continues to support sustainable coastal development across the Kingdom through reliable, data-driven marine survey solutions.
